The LED-based cornering light of the R1250GS (Adventure)

In my opinion, the LED cornering light of the last R1250GS series from model year 2021 is the best cornering light with a moving headlight. Only the R1300GS (Adventure) with its new LED matrix light can probably put it in the shade.
So the decision was made to retrofit it on my BMW R1200GS, model year 2014.

Links to how it works - there is no need to write everything again when it is already explained perfectly:

The retrofit routes

  1. Model year 2011 (LC) to 04.2017
The effort here is quite large, because you still have the old light control unit installed, which cannot drive the new headlight owing to its too small memory - i.e. for BMW and its future plans, there was simply too little flash memory on board.
This therefore has to be converted to the new BCO from build level 05.2017 are converted and the Lean angle sensor retrofitted under the seat. ESA is also mandatory. After that, everything is the same as on the newer models.

  2. Model year 05.2017 to present (R1200GS(A) and R1250GS(A))
Here you need to make sure that you already have the lean angle sensor under the seat as well as ESA; otherwise you will have to retrofit them. They are available for a few euros from your friendly dealer or on eBay. As soon as you have ESA, it is already installed on this model year.
The old halogen or LED headlight uses a 6-pin connector here with the following pin assignment:

I had a connector from a wiring harness where the colours were identical, so I soldered them together, put heat-shrink tubing over them and packed everything neatly again with the original BMW fabric tape. One pin is no longer needed (pin 2 green/blue)

Now it is time to code.

You need E-SYS with current data. This is called PSdZData; everyone who knows what they are doing knows this tool.

Here you have to extend the vehicle order (FA) by the options:
0134 Adaptive cornering light
0192 LED headlight
0219 Headlight Pro
If your control units have an I-level older than 2021, do an update via TAL beforehand. I will not go into this process in more detail in this blog post.

How extending the vehicle order and coding works:
1. Connect to your vehicle.
2. In the menu Expert mode -> VCM, read in your vehicle order.
E-SYS expert mode: reading in the VCM vehicle order
3. Now we save our vehicle order, ideally somewhere we can find it again.
E-SYS: saving the vehicle order as a file
4. At this point, the options in question must be added as shown in the screenshot. 134,192,219 - make sure that no options are duplicated, otherwise there will be an error. Afterwards, it is written back to the file by clicking Save at the top.
E-SYS: adding options 134, 192 and 219 for cornering light to the vehicle order
5. Now we switch back to the VCM menu item; E-SYS recognises that our file has been changed, and of course we want to accept these changes by clicking Yes.
E-SYS VCM recognises the changed vehicle order file and applies the changes
6. We now calculate the vehicle order by right-clicking and selecting ,,Calculate FP.
E-SYS: calculating the vehicle order FP
7. Now we have reached the point where the modified vehicle order must be written to the engine control unit (BMSMP8).
E-SYS: writing the vehicle order to the engine control unit BMSMP8
8. Finally, the control units must be told that something in the configuration has changed. To do this, we go to coding, read in the vehicle order again, read the current configuration from the control units (ECUs), select full flash and calculate.

After that, your control units appear on the left-hand side. Only the BCO and KOMBI3 are coded here. Everything else needs no new coding.
E-SYS: calculating coding of BCO and KOMBI3 with full flash

Finally, using the tool of your choice, clear the fault codes in the vehicle (you usually have some after E-SYS), and the new headlight works as if it had always been installed.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

For these model years the effort is greater, because the old light control unit cannot drive the new headlight due to a lack of memory. It has to be converted to the new BCO from build level 05.2017, and the lean angle sensor under the seat has to be retrofitted. ESA is also mandatory.

In the vehicle order (FA), the options 0134 (Adaptive Cornering light), 0192 (LED headlight) and 0219 (Headlight Pro) must be added before they are written to the vehicle via E-SYS using current PSdZData.

Only the BCO and the KOMBI3 (TFT display) are coded. All other control units need no new coding for this retrofit.
